Step by step

How to create a report or a presentation

  1. Pick a focused topic and audience

Decide who the report is for and what decision it should help with. “The EV market” is too broad; “EV adoption in Southeast Asia for a retail investor” works well.

    • Write the one question the report must answer.
    • Note the time period and region.
  2. Run Deep Research

Switch to Research mode and describe the report you want. Deep Research runs many searches, reads the sources and writes a long, cited report in a few minutes.

    • Ask for specific sections in your prompt.
    • Say which sources to prefer: official, academic, industry.
  3. Add your own files

Attach PDFs, spreadsheets or notes so the report uses your data alongside the web.

    • Great for company figures, survey results or reading lists.
    • See our PDF guide for tips on long files.
  4. Refine with follow-ups

Ask Perplexity to shorten sections, add a comparison table, expand the risks or rewrite for a different audience.

    • “Add an executive summary of 100 words.”
    • “Turn section 3 into a table.”
  5. Check the sources

Open the citations behind every key number and claim before you share the report.

    • Replace weak sources with official ones.
    • Keep the source list at the end.
  6. Export or share

Share a link to the thread, turn it into a Page, or copy it into Word or Google Docs for final formatting.

    • Pages give you a clean, shareable article.
    • Check what a shared link shows before sending.

What a good report looks like

  1. Executive summary: the answer in 100–150 words
  2. Background: context and key definitions
  3. Key findings: data, tables and charts, each with sources
  4. Analysis: what the findings mean for your audience
  5. Risks and limitations: gaps in the data, opposing views
  6. Recommendations: clear next steps
  7. Sources: the full list of citations

Is Perplexity Labs free?

Yes, as a research draft. Check every key fact against its source, add your own analysis, follow your school’s or employer’s AI rules, and cite the original sources.

How do I add charts to a report?

Ask for them directly (“add a bar chart of market share by company”), or use Labs, which can create charts and dashboards from the data it finds or you upload.
